Labor welcomes the Liberal Government’s backflip on Online Access Centres but regional communities still face uncertain futures.
Shadow Education Minister Michelle O’Byrne said the funding to extension to 2016 still leaves many centres in limbo.
“The Liberals have shamelessly spread fear in regional communities that these centres will be closed,” Ms O’Byrne said.
“They should not expect any praise at all for today’s announcement which appears more like a temporary stay of execution.
“The Government has only delayed a decision and does not give centres and the communities that rely on them any certainty at all.
“Labor has been working alongside Online Access Centres to secure their funding future.
“They are vital services, especially in regional communities, where in many cases it’s the only opportunity for people to access the internet.
“Internet connectivity in regional Tasmania is low and the Government needs to acknowledge that not only do people not have connection to the internet, they often don’t have a computer.
“Some people aren’t familiar with computers and the Internet and rely on community centres for support and coaching. They also provide other much needed community services and are supported by committed volunteers.
“The Government needs to be upfront with communities about what will happen to these Online Access Centres beyond next year.”
