Labor Leader Bryan Green today congratulated Norske Skog on securing a joint venture to manufacture chemical solvents from biomass.
Mr Green said the Commercial Demonstration Project could lead to fantastic value adding opportunities in the forest industry.
“I congratulate Norske Skog for their constant innovation and forward thinking.
“This is exactly the sort of project Labor had in mind when we pledged $7 million towards a Biofuels Innovation Fund.
“I hope that this venture is a success and that it will help secure the Boyer Mill’s long term future.”
Mr Green said while the long term prospects for bio-chemical production were exciting, the Government could not take its eye off the ball in solving the broader residue problems in the Southern Forests.
“This investment should not be used as an excuse by Minister Harriss to wash his hands of the critical short term residue problem.”
