Shadow Minister for Corrections Madeleine Ogilvie remains committed to playing a practical role from opposition when it comes to reform in our prison system.
“Labor’s prepared to put forward constructive, positive ideas from opposition to address issues within the prison system,” Ms Ogilvie said.
“In the context of the recent deaths in custody, self-harm, and serious events including hostage taking and prisoner escapes, it is entirely appropriate that all available information is released.
“Minister Goodwin has failed to demonstrate that she is in control.
“We need a Minister who is hands-on and prepared to take an active role when it comes to reform.
“If it was me, I’d be at the coalface, working with staff on a new way forward – not washing my hands of the situation.
“The Government must work to improve life in our prisons and reduce the alarming number of serious incidents.
“A strategic review of Tasmanian corrections processes would mean we could benchmark our system against national and international best practice.
“We need to identify in which areas Tasmania does not meet the UNHCR baselines when it comes to prisoner treatment.
“We must look at staffing levels, culture, safety and rehabilitations programs.
“Staff, families, prisoners and the people of Tasmania have a right to know what the problem is. We are not dealing with an ordinary or isolated incident.
“Prison reform must be addressed in a sensible and systemic way.”
