This Government’s number one priority is jobs and we are rolling out a long-term Plan to create a job-ready generation.
Today I was pleased to announce IT@Work, another part of our plan to create a job-ready generation and the first project funded under the Hodgman Liberal Government’s ICT Industries Workforce Development Plan.
This project is about giving students real skills for real jobs.
IT@Work is a $75,000 Government initiative to bring the ICT industry and the education sector together to provide real world experience in the ICT sector to UTas and TAFE students.
IT@Work is an online portal for employers to register projects which are suitable for students and for students to express their interest in being involved in the projects.
The portal will also support education providers gather information on project content and support student assessment.
The portal joins up employers in diverse industries with students – their future workforce. It goes part of the way to giving students practical experience so valued by employers.
Through this portal, employers will submit suitable projects for consideration by the project managers.
The project team anticipate that up to 20 projects will be worked on by TasTAFE and UTAS students giving them real world practical experience in developing IT solutions.
This illustrates that choosing to study can provide practical work experience with the exposure to potential employers while still at Uni or TAFE, plus help developing critical real life experience for students in the workplace.
It’s through innovative projects like this that we will encourage more of our ICT students to study and stay in Tasmania, which is great for the community, population growth and jobs.
