Six week shut down of Tahune Airwalk not acceptable
Labor Member for Franklin Lara Giddings has expressed her disappointment at news the Tahune Airwalk will be shut down for six weeks due to logging and maintenance.
“The Tahune Airwalk is one of the leading tourist attractions in the Huon Valley,” Ms Giddings said.
“There must be a solution that doesn’t see the Airwalk shut down for six weeks.
“Tourism and forestry need to be able to exist side-by-side.
“It’s tough enough for tourism operators in the Huon Valley during winter as it is, to shut down a major attraction is a massive blow.”
Shadow Tourism Minister Scott Bacon echoed Ms Giddings’ sentiment.
“The Government must find an outcome that doesn’t impact on tourism operators so severely,” Mr Bacon said.
“The Tahune Airwalk brings a lot of people to the Huon Valley and its closure will have significant flow-on effects to other small business in the area.
“It’s extremely disappointing to hear access to the Hartz Mountains National Park will also be restricted.”
