The Hodgman Liberal Government is working to realise our vision of growing the number of visitors to Tasmania to 1.5 million a year by 2020.

Today’s announcement that the North-West – the Cradle Coast region – will host the 2017 Australian Masters Games will help achieve our goal by bringing thousands of people to the 10-day competition.

This is a great result for the Coast, and demonstrates the benefits of our close working relationship with the Federal Government and local councils.

We were pleased to commit up to $750,000 to help bring the multi-sport event to the region, with the Commonwealth making a similar commitment and the Cradle Coast Authority securing further funding and in-kind support from its member councils.

In recent years, the Games have attracted competitors, volunteers and family members and friends from across the country and from overseas.

It is estimated that while competitors and supporters are here they will inject $7-9 million into the local economy, and many will likely continue their stays after the Games to enjoy more of what Tasmania has to offer.

This really is a great opportunity for the Cradle Coast to showcase our region’s unique hospitality, natural attractions and premium produce to Australians from across the country.

On behalf of the Government, I congratulate all involved in securing the 2017 Masters Games for the North-West.
