While in Cornwall I chase up my ancestors on my mum’s ‘Thomas’ side 161 years after they arrived in Australia.
In 1853 John Thomas died at 33 years old from a mining accident. His wife Amelia left for Australia in 1854, with 4 young boys.
I find the Thomas family plot in the cemetery at Gulval and discover the gravesite of another John Thomas, who was a pirate and displays a skull and crossbones on his gravestone with a unique set of eyebrows and olde english quote.
