… on earth that are on their way out (with apologies to Dr Seuss)
Working in environmental law can sometimes feel like a struggle. The laws are often unhelpful, the opponents are well funded, accessing vital information can be difficult and the threats to the environment mount up.
But we’re a relentlessly positive bunch at EDO Tasmania. We know that environmental law is important and that we’ve got to keep fighting until the laws are better, public participation is respected and environmental goals are achieved. Knowing that so many people agree is what keeps us going.
In the twelve months since we lost the last of our Federal funding, we haven’t slowed down. Far from it:
• We successfully challenged a decision regarding storage of acid mine waste in the Tarkine
• We secured an interim injunction preventing 4WDs damaging sensitive cultural heritage areas on the West Coast, and we’re working with the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre to permanently stop the tracks from being opened
• We’ve worked with a wide range of groups concerned about proposed changes to the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area management plan
• We helped farmers and rural landowners understand their rights when faced with mining proposals on their land
• We helped to oppose the anti-protest legislation and we advocated for an extension of the moratorium on fracking activities
• We stood up against moves to delegate Federal environmental approval powers to the Tasmanian government
• We advocated for more effective environmental laws, better regulation of forestry and aquaculture, and a planning system that addresses environmental issues and involves the public in decision-making
• We provided advice to people from all over Tasmania concerned about their local environment
• We continue to keep Tasmanians informed about laws, policies and proposals that may affect them
We would not have been able to do all of this (and more!) without public support. To misquote the Lorax, when people like you care a whole awful lot, things will get better. They will. The battle for a healthy, sustainable and vibrant Tasmania is far from over, but with your help we’ll continue the fight.
Even though we are a glass-half-full crew, our financial cup needs to be closer to full for us to keep doing our job well. There is still time to make a tax deductible donation before the end of this financial year (if you would prefer not to donate online, check our website for more options).
Thanks for your support (especially if you’ve recently donated),
