Using the law to protect the environment

Posted on

It’s been twelve months since they lost the last of their Federal funding, but EDO Tasmania remains committed to securing better environmental outcomes for our State. Here are just some of the things they’ve achieved:

• Successfully challenging a decision regarding storage of acid mine waste in the Tarkine

• Securing an interim injunction preventing 4WDs damaging sensitive cultural heritage areas on the West Coast (and continuing efforts to permanently stop the tracks from being opened on behalf of the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre)

• Assisting a wide range of groups to have their say regarding proposed changes to the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area management plan

• Helping farmers and rural landowners understand their rights when faced with mining proposals on their land

• Helping to oppose the anti-protest legislation and advocating for an extension of the moratorium on fracking activities

• Standing up against moves to delegate Federal environmental approval powers to the Tasmanian government

• Advocating for more effective environmental laws, better regulation of forestry and aquaculture, and a planning system that addresses environmental issues and involves the public in decision-making

• Providing advice to people from all over Tasmania concerned about their local environment

• Keeping Tasmanians informed about laws, policies and proposals that may affect them

With the current development pressures on Tasmania’s precious places, it is a critical time for the community to have access to expert legal advice to protect the environment. To keep providing these services, EDO Tasmania needs public support.

There are various ways you can make a tax deductible donation, from a one-off contribution to regular monthly giving.
