Tasmania’s first car tyre cleanup event
Volunteers from the local South Arm community and the Tasmanian Conservation Trust will today be combining on what is probably Tasmania’s first ever car tyre cleanup event.
Volunteers will be collecting, cleaning and stacking more than 500 car tyres ready to be collected and recycled. The tyres are a major fire hazard, especially as they are so close to the South Arm Primary School. They are also a eyesore in an area that many locals walk.
The TCT Director Peter McGlone today said “This event may be the first time in Tasmania that a large dump of car tyres has been cleaned up by the community and we hope this triggers many more similar events.
“The TCT has identified more than 5000 car tyres that are illegally dumped or inappropriately stored at 20 sites around Tasmania and they will also be cleaned up and recycled when we have raised the funds.
“We encourage people from around Tasmania to report car tyres so they can be cleaned up and this can be done easily and anonymously via the TCT’s new web site TasTyreCleanup.com”
“We also want this project to encourage people to pay a little bit extra to have tyres recycled and prevent more tyres being dumped and stored unsafely.
“The South Arm School must be congratulated for being proactive in wanting these tyres removed and in obtaining the funds from the Department of Education to have them collected.”
“The TCT thanks Tyrecycle Pty Ltd who will recycle the tyres at a discounted rate and local contractor Tyrecycle Tasmania for collecting the tyres.”
