The Hodgman Liberal Government welcomes the passing of the Renewable Energy Target legislation which provides certainty for Tasmania’s investments in renewable energy and secures local jobs.

Passed through the Senate last night, the Renewable Energy (Electricity) Amendment Bill ends the uncertainty which had stalled investment in the renewable energy sector and secures the future of our trade exposed major industrials through a full exemption.

These measures help secure the jobs of thousands of Tasmanians as we get on with the job of once again making energy a competitive advantage that works to the benefit of all Tasmanians.

We’re pleased that wood residues were included in the final bill, although it was disappointing to see Federal Tasmanian Labor Senators remaining opposed to their inclusion.

It is important that all possible uses for wood residues are available in order to maximise jobs in the forest industry, and there is no doubt that using wood residue to create renewable energy is preferable to exporting woodchips.

Throughout the review of the RET, the Tasmanian Government has continued to work with the Federal Government to ensure appropriate recognition for Tasmania’s existing hydropower resources.

We congratulate the Federal Government on achieving a bipartisan agreement which secures Tasmania’s investment in renewable energy and provides further security for Tasmanian jobs.
