On behalf of Tasmanian Labor, Deputy Leader Michelle O’Byrne has paid tribute to Labor legend Joan Kirner.
Australia’s first woman Premier has passed away after a two year battle with cancer at the age of 76.
“Joan was an inspiration to Labor women right across the country,” Ms O’Byrne said.
“She blazed the way for women in parliamentary leadership and continued the fight for equality of representation and strong female representatives, including Australia’s first female Prime Minister Julia Gillard.
“Joan was a passionate advocate for women, for education and healthcare and was active in all of these causes right to the end.
“To me, Joan Kirner was an idol, a beautiful, warm person and a truly great Labor person. She lived an extraordinary life.
“Joan was instrumental in the establishment of Emily’s List in Australia which continues to support progressive women throughout their careers.
“Joan’s legacy will live on long after she’s gone.
“On behalf of Tasmanian Labor, I extend my deepest sympathy to Joan’s family.”
