Matthew Groom turns his back on own Energy Paper

Posted on

Energy Minister Matthew Groom is demonstrating an extraordinary lack of foresight by ridiculing Labor’s vision to embrace new transport technology.

“Matthew Groom is ignoring what is happening around the world with the take-up of electric transport,” Mr Green said.

“What’s even worse is that Mr Groom is turning a blind eye to the impending energy crisis for our hydro electricity network caused by the take-up of solar panels.

“Electric transport technology is developing so rapidly that I’m amazed Mr Groom just doesn’t get it.

“We need to be making decisions now that will enable Tasmanians to take advantage of our hydro system to power our State in the future.

“This is about investment and jobs in Tasmania for Tasmanians.

“Mr Groom’s own Energy Paper states very clearly that ‘emerging technologies will continue to change the energy landscape’ and that ‘battery storage and electric vehicles could be a game changer’.

“It seems Mr Groom hasn’t even bothered to read his own report?

“Tasmania has the highest rate of car ownership in Australia. We spend more than $1 billion a year on petrol and diesel imports and we pay the highest fuel prices in the country”.

“Converting to electric energy would give Tasmania the opportunity to become energy self sufficient when it comes to transport costs.

“Mr Groom should show some leadership and embrace electric transport technology instead of ignoring his own advice and burying his head in the sand.”
