Liberals vote for wage increase

Posted on

The Premier needs to explain to the community and his own workforce why he believes politicians should receive pay rises far in excess of State Wages Policy.

At a time when teachers, health workers and park rangers are being asked to accept wage increases of 2 per cent, the Government has forced through a bill that will almost certainly see politicians given far higher increases.

Labor voted against the Parliamentary Salaries, Superannuation and Allowances Amendment Bill 2015.

“Labor’s firm position is that wages for parliamentarians should be tied to the public service,” Mr Green said.

“This position is entirely reasonable and consistent with legislation that the Liberals actually supported in 2012.

“The Liberals are trying to play politics with this issue, but they will need to justify any increases that our out of step with community expectations.”

Mr Green has written to the President of the Industrial Commission to ensure they clearly understand Labor’s position.

“If this Bill passes the Upper House in its current form Labor will also make a formal submission to the Commission calling for salaries to be tied to increases in the public service.”
