Landcare grants open for communities in Northern Tasmania
Landcare and community groups in Northern Tasmania are now able to apply for grants of up to $5000 for projects to help care for the region’s natural environment.
The grants are part of the Government’s National Landcare Programme and managed locally by NRM North – one of Australia’s 56 regional natural resource management organisations.
“This is a great opportunity for local communities to come together and tackle important works aimed at addressing local natural resource management priorities,” Minister for the Environment, Greg Hunt, said.
“The Government is ensuring that National Landcare Programme funding is invested locally to deliver real change that is targeted to the environment and the land. This is crucial because locals know what works best for their environment and their community,” Minister Hunt said.
“Volunteers make a significant contribution to the conservation and rehabilitation of some of our most iconic and special places and these grants will support the Landcare community’s endeavours to help protect Tasmania’s unique natural environment,” Bass MP, Andrew Nikolic, said.
“Strong involvement by individuals and organisations will help ensure the grant programme is used to its maximum benefit, targeting natural resource management priorities in Northern Tasmania,” Mr Nikolic said.
“Projects may cover areas such as planting native trees, weed control, fencing, field days or training, Aboriginal land management and sharing cultural information or maintenance of past works,” Federal Member for Lyons, Eric Hutchinson, said.
“What successful Landcare projects all have in common, is that they will engage the community, while helping restore local ecosystems and protect natural assets so people can continue to enjoy the long-term benefit of a healthy and livable environment,” Mr Hutchinson said.
“By helping communities to deliver simple, local and long-term solutions to improve their local environment, we are putting Landcare back at the centre of natural resource management in Australia,” Mr Hunt said.
The Government’s total investment in natural resource management programmes amounts to over $2 billion over the next four years—of which more than $450 million is being invested through Australia’s natural resource management organisations.
