Labor’s Budget reply looks to the future with innovation
Labor has today demonstrated the vision and compassion sorely lacking in the 2015/16 Liberal Budget.
Labor Leader Bryan Green used his Budget reply speech to lay the foundation for a positive and innovative alternative in Tasmania.
“Tasmania deserves leadership that looks beyond political cycles and plans for the future,” Mr Green said.
“It deserves a Government that values everyone in the community equally and is there for Tasmanians who are doing it tough.
“Labor’s history of setting Tasmania up for the future speaks for itself and today I’ve outlined some of the things the next Labor government will focus on.”
• Labor will establish the Tasmanian Education Partnership to work collaboratively with the Peter Underwood Centre to take education policy out of the political cycle.
• Labor will take the first steps towards securing Tasmania’s energy future by investing in electric transport technology to create jobs and future-proof the state in the face of rapidly changing electricity usage.
The $10 million investment would kickstart an economic game-changer for Tasmania.
• Labor will invigorate the minerals sector with a three point strategy aimed at encouraging mine rehabilitation, creating a special zone around the Mt Lyell mine and mobilising case managers to drive exploration.
• Labor will invest in a Bio-Fuels Innovation Fund to match private sector investment dollar for dollar.
• Labor will take action on sugary drinks and e-cigarettes to lead the way when it comes to preventative health.
• Labor will build at least two new Child and Family Centres in the first term of government.
• Labor will give more children the chance to participate in organised by sport by assisting with the cost of participation.
• Labor will direct Infrastructure Tasmania to engage with TasWater to identify priority water and sewerage projects.
“The policies announced today show that unlike the Liberals, Labor is thinking about Tasmania’s future beyond the next election.
“This is not about what Labor might do or could do, it’s about what we will do in 2018.
“We will keep holding this arrogant Liberal Government to account, especially when it comes to its attack on essential services.
“But we’ll also demonstrate to Tasmanians that there’s a positive, forward thinking alternative to the mean spirited, over-confident Government.”
