Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to you as a ratepayer of Glenorchy because I am disturbed at what is happening with the council.
Kristie Johnston stood for Mayor and had a resounding victory.
After the election, 6 of the Aldermen – some of whom had stood for Mayor – insisted that they accept a report from the General Manager (which had parts of it censored) about restructuring their staff and insisted on passing the report without reading it – over the objections of the Mayor who legally adjourned the meeting.
The media later reported that the Mayor had been correct on the adjournment of the meeting and presumably the consequent restructuring was not legal.
Nonetheless the gang of 6 proceeded with restructuring at a cost I understand of about $1 million dollars.
Now the gang of 6 want to try and stop the Mayor issuing press statements.
I am on the board of a number of corporations and I would not accept the CEO censoring a report to his boss (the Board) nor would I accept a report being adopted without reading it. I would expect my fellow board members to adopt the same attitude to good governance.
I have always been a firm supporter of democracy and I am disgusted with the actions of the gang of 6, particularly since it is costing the ratepayers a lot of money.
If the gang of 6 continue to behave in an undemocratic manner, they should resign.
John Green
