Ferguson must heed warnings of health leaders
Health Minister Michael Ferguson must rule out closing hospital wards as a consequence of savage budget cuts.
Both Australian Medical Association secretary Tim Greenaway and Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation secretary Neroli Ellis have expressed concerns this week about the ongoing impact of the Liberals’ harsh cuts.
Shadow Health Minister Rebecca White said it’s time Mr Ferguson started listening to senior voices in health when it comes to relieving pressure from our hospitals.
“Senior people in health are telling the Minister that hospitals are stretched to breaking point and he keeps ignoring them,” Ms White said.
“Health still has to find savings next year which Tim Greenaway says is impossible because departments have already been “cut to the bone”.
“The ANMF has flagged the danger of ward closures if action is not taken.
“These are the sort of statements that should sound alarm bells for Michael Ferguson.
“The amount the Liberals invested in health in this year’s Budget will barely cover inflation and last year’s overspend.
“This is despite an increase in GST of $590 million and a $220 million infrastructure election war chest.
“The Government has the capacity to reverse some of the damage it’s done to our health system but refuses to.”
