Court decision welcomed

Posted on

The Hodgman Liberal Government welcomes the decision of the Federal Court to dismiss the Tarkine National Coalition’s appeal against Venture’s Riley Creek Mine.

Today’s decision effectively ends the TNC’s relentless and baseless campaign against the Riley Creek Mine and jobs in the North West and Venture Minerals can now get on with the job.

Venture had placed Riley Creek into care and maintenance while the appeal was ongoing and will now make a decision on when to commence mining.

Riley Creek is a key project for Venture in the North West which, along with the Livingstone mine, will allow the company to generate capital in order to establish the longer term Mt Lindsay operation and create jobs in the region.

The proposed Mt Lindsay mine represents an important new long term project for Tasmania with significant direct and indirect employment opportunities generated on the West Coast during the construction and operation phases. It is estimated that the project will involve approximately 200 jobs once operational.

The Tasmanian Government will pursue costs against the TNC on behalf of taxpayers.
