Calls to facilitate shipment of ore from North-West mine

Posted on

Labor Leader Bryan Green today called on Resources Minister Paul Harriss to help open the door to negotiations between Shree Minerals and TasPorts to ship ore out of Burnie.

“Shree wants to move ore from its Nelson Bay mine and out of Burnie but the costs are prohibitive,” Mr Green said.

“Mr Harriss today confirmed Tasmanian ports, including Burnie, are operating under capacity so it would make sense to talk with the company to facilitate a shipment.

“It is encouraging that Mr Harriss at least recognises the problem and now he has the opportunity to do something about it.

“It is a difficult time for our mining sector and this would help Shree Minerals and generate work.

“By his own admission, Mr Harriss believes there is an under-utilised capacity in our ports which could be the catalyst for Shree to get a shipment underway.

“This would provide much needed work at the mine and on the wharf.

“I am writing to TasPorts to explore the options and hope Mr Harriss gets behind the idea to support the company.”
