Backing ICT and innovation
Labor’s Shadow Minister for Technology and Innovation Madeleine Ogilvie has used her Budget reply speech to demonstrate her passion and vision for the sector.
“Labor supports growth in the tech and communications sector, and has with its NBN investment, laid the foundation for economic growth in Tasmania,” Ms Ogilvie said.
“We have a vision for a ‘whole of state’ approach to maximising our NBN advantage. We see the communications and tech sector as having the capacity to not only build new products and services, but also to be able to deliver major transformative change to our state.
“We must strategically invest in our tech sector to create further opportunities.
“Labor would work with the Federal Government to create a range of incentives for companies to choose Tasmania first. Central to this is making sure our local young people have access to TAFE training that enables them to secure entry level positions in technology infrastructure companies. We’ve already had success bringing key stakeholders together.
“Tasmania has the capacity to become a national leader in niche content creation. This will require leadership, targeted support and getting our regulatory settings right.
“Small business, micro-businesses, social enterprises and not for profit groups will all benefit from the improved digital literacy of our people. We support continuing efforts to provide education and professional services to small businesses.
“We support the sharing economy. Labor believes we can strike a balance between consumer demand and ensuring a fair go for existing small businesses and contractors. Regulatory reform is required.
“Labor encourages and supports increased levels of participation in the tech sector and digital economy by individuals in traditionally underrepresented categories – importantly women, the elderly, migrants and those moving from skills based workforce into knowledge economy jobs.
“The Liberal Government is not doing enough when it comes to innovation and Labor is working hard so it’s ready to capitalise when next in government.”
