Additional Roads to Recovery Funding Welcomed

Posted on

The Local Government Association of Tasmania (LGAT) has welcomed the Federal Government’s decision last week to further boost Roads to Recovery funding following an announcement it will be re-introducing the indexation of fuel excise to inflation.

An estimated $1.1 billion per year nationally for the next two years will be provided as additional funding to Local Government.

“I am delighted with this announcement,” said Acting LGAT President, Mayor Daryl Quilliam.

“The Roads to Recovery program is vital for addressing local road maintenance and renewal, and has been assisting Tasmanian councils to make decisions about local works at the local level for more than a decade.”

“Improving the productivity and safety of local roads is an important part in strengthening local economies,” Mayor Quilliam said.

“This extra funding is particularly welcome at a time when councils have had to make tough decisions following the 2014-15 Federal Budget freeze to the indexation of Financial Assistance Grants,” he said.
