Aboriginal community let down by Liberals

Posted on

Shadow Attorney-General Lara Giddings said news the Tasmanian Aboriginal Legal Service is closing its doors shows the Hodgman Government failed to stand up for the Aboriginal community at a critical time.

“Both the State and Federal Liberal Governments have abandoned the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre, leaving it with no choice but to shut down its legal service,” Ms Giddings said.

“This is a very sad outcome after decades of providing legal support to Aboriginal Tasmanians.

“The decision to withdraw funding from the Tasmanian provider was unfair and very poorly handled by the Liberals.

“The Tasmanian Aboriginal Legal Service had shown good will in its negotiations, only to be ignored by the Liberals.

“The Tasmanian Aboriginal Legal Service deserved to be treated with more respect than was shown by Senator Brandis.”
