Work continues on Royal Hobart Hospital Redevelopment

Posted on

The Hodgman Liberal Government is getting on with the job of redeveloping the Royal Hobart Hospital so we can deliver better health outcomes for Tasmanians.

In recent weeks several opportunities have been advertised for packages of work which will create up to 500 local jobs and enable local businesses to be part of this major redevelopment project.

This weekend people in the Hobart CBD will notice more redevelopment activity underway, with cranes installing new hot water heat pumps on the roofs of four hospital buildings.

The new hot water heat pumps will supply new wards refurbished as part of the Redevelopment’s decanting plan and maintain supply to existing areas.

Newly refurbished wards that will be supplied include orthopaedic inpatients, iodine therapy, sub-specialty medicine and inpatient oncology wards.

Work to allow the safe decanting of patients to enable the full redevelopment is well underway, with clinical and office spaces now being refurbished so hospital services can be relocated onsite and B-Block demolished.

The delivery of a safe and workable decanting plan was a critical element of the Rescue Taskforce’s work. The previous Government’s plan was never completed and required patients to be sent offsite and to various parts of greater Hobart, creating huge concerns for patient safety and a major risk to the redevelopment continuing at all.

Work packages advertised in recent weeks includes construction on critical parts of the redevelopment: the construction of K-Block, the new ten storey inpatient facility to be completed in late 2018, and works to enable the construction of the temporary Liverpool St facility which was a critical part of the Rescue Taskforce’s work to get the project back on track.

To enable the installation of the hot water heat pumps the RHH Argyle Street slip lane will be closed on Saturday between 7 am – 12 noon while crane lifts occur. Installation will continue on Sunday, 24 May.
