Tasmanian Labor supports biomass in the RET
Opposition Leader Bryan Green will lobby his Labor colleagues in Canberra to include biomass in the Renewable Energy Target.
“Tasmanian Labor supports the inclusion of biomass in the RET,” Mr Green said.
“Tasmania’s forest industry needs a long term solution when it comes to utilising native forest residues and we believe biomass is an important part of the future.
“This is also an opportunity to utilise other feedstock like plantation timber, gorse and other weeds.
“I am determined to work with my Federal colleagues to find a compromise solution that supports the Tasmanian forest industry and brings broader benefits to our economy.”
Mr Green said it was disingenuous of the Liberals to play politics with this issue.
“If the Liberals were truly interested in getting a bipartisan agreement on biomass, then they should have put the issue on the table at the very start of negotiations over the RET.
“Instead, it was introduced at the 11th hour as a political wedge. That is not the way constructive negotiations should take place.”
