I would like to recognise Senator Christine Milne, and pay tribute to her contribution and dedication to the Parliament over the past 25 years. As a fellow Tasmanian Senator I have always worked well with Senator Milne.

After a quarter of a century serving the people of Tasmania in our state and federal parliaments, Senator Milne has stepped down from the leadership of the Australian Greens Party and announced that she will not be contesting the next election.

During her time in politics Senator Milne has worked tirelessly for the people of Tasmania and campaigned on environmental issues in Tasmania, Australia and all over the world.

She has made a significant contribution as a Tasmanian Senator and as the first female leader of a Tasmanian political party. I thank her for the sacrifice she has made to improve Australia.

I have been fortunate to work with Senator Milne on a number of issues during our time in the Australian Senate, particularly in defence of the Renewable Energy Target, advocating for sufferers of Hepatitis and HIV/AIDS and the treatment of asylum seekers.

I thank her for her contribution to climate change policy and her support for Tasmania’s World Heritage Area.

I look forward to working and debating with Senator Milne until she leaves the Senate. I wish her well in her future endeavours, through which I’m sure she will continue her valuable contributions to make Australia a better country.
