Tasmania’s Chief Magistrate Mr Michael Hill has recently advised the Governor of his intention to retire from his position on 21 October 2015.
Chief Magistrate Hill was appointed Tasmania’s first small claims magistrate in 1985, before being appointed as a Magistrate on 22 December 1987 and appointed the Chief Magistrate on 13 July 2009.
During his time with the Court, Chief Magistrate Hill has had a particular interest in ensuring effective case management, introducing innovative court procedures and the concept of therapeutic jurisprudence – that is the impact that interaction with the court, personnel, and processes has on individuals.
He was instrumental in the introduction of the Contest Mention court in Tasmania in 1996 and in the establishment and piloting of the Mental Health Diversion List in the Hobart Magistrates Court in May 2007.
While Chief Magistrate Hill will remain in his position until his retirement in October, it is timely to thank him for his exceptional service to the Magistrates Court and the Tasmanian community, and to wish him well in retirement.
Following the Governor’s acceptance of Chief Magistrate Hill’s resignation, the process for appointing a new Chief Magistrate will commence.
