Rebuilt Dunalley community hall complete
Dunalley residents who experienced the tragedy of the devastating 2013 bushfires will have more closure with the opening of the town’s new community hall.
Federal Lyons MP Eric Hutchinson said that the rebuilt hall had been extensively modernised to provide major benefits to the community.
“From the state-of-the-art kitchen and audio-visual facilities through to disabled access and solar power, this project will provide residents with a facility to be proud of,” Mr Hutchinson said.
“Residents and community groups will be able to host regional events while improved disability access through the installation of upgraded toilets will support the needs of residents.
“The destruction of more than 100 properties, including the Dunalley Hall, was a strong reminder of the power of Mother Nature.
“The Dunalley Hall has been a key part of the local community since it was first opened on May 18 1889 and the reconstruction of this building is an important contribution to the community.
“Every resident remembers the devastation caused by these bushfires and even with the best efforts of Tasmania’s firefighters, dozens of families lost their homes and livelihoods.
“Today not only marks the anniversary of the construction of the hall more than 100 years ago, it also gives residents a modern place to socialise with their friends and family.
“This is an important investment in community infrastructure that will serve the Tasman/Sorell community for years to come.”
The Federal Government provided $250,000 towards the $1.63 million project with local groups and charitable organisations contributing to the rest.
