The Labor Opposition is committed to offering a positive, constructive alternative to the broken promises and one line slogans of the Liberal Government.
Labor Leader Bryan Green today announced the Opposition’s reply to this year’s Budget will be based on the policy priorities identified in consultation with Tasmanians over the past year.
“Labor has spent the past year talking to Tasmanians and we will use our reply to the Budget to begin outlining the policies we will take to the election in 2018,” Mr Green said.
“Over the coming weeks we will be making announcements on health, education and jobs. We intend to build on these priority areas over the next three years.
“We will not be following the Liberal Party’s example of releasing misleading alternative budgets.
“We know that Tasmanians want a credible alternative to the broken promises and hollow rhetoric of the Liberal Government,” Mr Green said.
“Labor’s committed to being positive in opposition while continuing to hold the Liberals to account.
“Our response to this year’s budget will be based on sound alternative policies, not one line promises we can’t keep.
“The Liberals used their response to budgets in opposition to fool Tasmanians into believing they could be everything to everyone.
“Their 2013/14 alternative budget now looks like a work of parody.
“In little more than 12 months of governing they’ve broken almost every commitment they made to Tasmanians while in opposition.
“Their alternative budget now reads like a series of cruel tricks designed to mislead voters in order to get elected.
“The Liberals promised a budget surplus, to invest more in schools, to cut red and green tape, to establish an international shipping link, to grow the forest industry, to buy locally and to fix elective surgery.
“On every count they’ve let down the people who voted them into power.
“We refuse to treat Tasmanians with the same contempt.
“Labor’s response to the budget will be based in reality.”
