FEDERAL Lyons MP Eric Hutchinson today urged local primary schools to take up the opportunity to apply for sports funding from the Government’s new Sporting Schools Program.

Mr Hutchinson said that the Government had set aside $100 million nationally for children’s sports programs which take place before, during or after school.

“I urge schools who have not registered to do so and apply for funding,” Mr Hutchinson said.

“The new program aims to give local primary schools more versatility to run activities before, during or after school time.”

Local primary schools in Lyons can apply for funding from now until June 26.

“Sporting Schools is about developing children’s love of sport during these early years,” Mr Hutchinson said.

“It’s about nurturing their love of fitness and activity so they stay committed to a long term sporting life – it’s about fostering skills in leadership, team work, and community spirit.”

More than 2000 primary schools have registered for the program which aims to eventually include 5,700 primary schools across the country and target 850,000 children.

The latest research tells us that only one third of children manage the recommended hour of physical activity a day and only half are involved in sport.
