Labor Leader Bryan Green said continued Commonwealth funding for the Mersey Community Hospital was a wild card in the Federal Budget.
“Why has funding for the Mersey been included in previous budgets, but not this year?” Mr Green said.
“It only raises suspicion that funding to the Mersey will be cut.
Mr Green called on State Health Minister Michael Ferguson and Federal Member for Braddon Brett Whiteley to guarantee that current funding levels to the Mersey will be maintained.
“Mr Ferguson will not commit to the same level of funding.
“It appears from all of Mr Ferguson’s comments that the funding agreement is up for negotiation.
“Mr Ferguson needs to be upfront on whether or not he is fighting to retain the $70 million Commonwealth commitment to the Mersey.
“Mr Ferguson says he’s confident of a funding ‘deal’ being done but what is that actually going to mean for the Mersey?
“If the current level of funding is to be maintained, why won’t Mr Ferguson just come out and say it?
“People are concerned that any loss of services from the Mersey will be used as an excuse to cut funding.”
