Frackman comes to Tasmania
Dayne Pratzky will be touring Tasmania this week to promote the screening of Frackman,
the film that documents his five year battle with the Unconventional Gas Industry. The movie
follows his personal journey and explores what prompted him to take on the 70 Billion dollar
Unconventional gas industry.
Dayne is an unlikely activist, far removed from the latte sipping set or the dreadlocked
stereotype. His background is in the construction industry and he describes himself as the
“Worst environmentalist this country has ever seen. I’ve been a pig and roo shooter, cut
down 100 year old Iron Bark trees for fence posts and drives a diesel four wheel drive.” In
the early 2007 Dayne moved to Queensland to get away from the hustle and bustle of inner
Sydney, where he ran afoul of gas exploration.
“I was deeply concerned by what I saw happening in my community,” said Dayne. “People
were worried about their water and their kids’ health. I wanted to do something, so I decided
to document what was going on, but more than that I knew we had to fight back. Otherwise
our community would be ruined forever.”
Dayne said he plans to try and make the Tasmanian public understand what happens to a
community once Unconventional gas industry and fracking move in. He said “The fact the
Tasmanian government has imposed a moratorium doesn’t put the issue to rest. The people
of Tasmania need an out right legislated ban and until they get it they should keep up the
pressure on state and Federal politicians.”
He also is asking Tasmanians to join his divestment campaign. “I started in the trenches and
now I’m taking them on at the top end of town. I’m a big advocate for Divestment,” Dayne
explained, “I believe it’s something everyone can do, whether they’re directly effected or not.
Everyone has a bank account and superannuation, that money is lent to companies who
then use it to drill their wells and build infrastructure, I think everyone should divest away
from any bank or fund that supports the industry, it’s the only language they will understand.”
