Farmers back Libs’ biosecurity regime

Posted on

The Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association said today it supports the state government’s biosecurity reform program, which has already proved itself through management of pets and diseases such as the recent blueberry and myrtle rust outbreaks.

“We are interested in outcomes not internal processes; the result is the important factor for agriculture,” TFGA chief executive Peter Skillern said.

“The important context for us is that the annual cost to Australia of invasive animals, for example, is at least three-quarters of a billion dollars in lost agricultural production and control costs.

“We have to address that problem with effective action. As we have already said this week, feral cats are a serious threat to Tasmanian biodiversity and the government’s moves to manage the problem are laudable.”
