Assistance for Nepal

The Tasmanian Government is providing $10,000 to the Rotary Tasmania Nepal Earthquake Appeal to support those affected by the earthquake in Nepal.

All funds raised by the Rotary Tasmania Appeal will go directly to the Rotary Club of Hetauda, based south of Kathmandu, to assist directly with the recovery.

These funds add to the $10,000 already provided by Rotary Tasmania for the recovery effort in Nepal.

The Premier Will Hodgman said the Tasmanian Government has offered assistance from the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Department of Emergency Management.

“On behalf of all Tasmanians I extend our deepest condolences to all those affected by the earthquake, especially those who lost loved ones in Nepal, India and Bangladesh,” he said.

“In Tasmania we have gathered in support and solidarity with our Nepalese and Bhutanese communities at several vigils.

“The recovery will be long and challenging, but it is our hope that this donation will help those affected as they begin to rebuild during this difficult time.”

Member for Braddon Joan Rylah said she had worked with Rotary Tasmania to raise significant funds in the past, and had confidence that their close ties with Nepal would ensure these funds were put to good use.

“Rotary has an incredible capacity to help communities rebuild from tragedies such as this earthquake,” she said.

“The Tasmanian Rotary Club has an enduring relationship with the Rotary Club of Hetauda, including two annual Eye Camps, to assist with cataract surgeries, and the funding a number of school and water projects.

“This funding will build on this relationship and assist in vital work that will help recovery efforts.”
