Premier must stave off GST threat
Shadow Treasurer Scott Bacon has expressed alarm about a seeming willingness from the Federal Government to tinker with GST distribution.
“Federal Treasurer Joe Hockey and Finance Minister Mathias Cormann are both very sympathetic to WA’s cause and that spells trouble for Tasmania,” Mr Bacon said.
“Will Hodgman must use COAG this week to demonstrate how important this issue is for Tasmania. He must send an uncompromising message to Tony Abbott and Joe Hockey.
“Peter Gutwein must continue to take the fight up to WA Treasurer Mike Nahan.
“Labor supports the approach Mr Gutwein has taken so far but he can’t afford to take his eye off the ball now.
“The Federal Government is desperately looking to appease WA but that will end up hurting Tasmania.
“Tasmania is entitled to its fair share of GST and any change to the way its distributed would damage the Federation.”
