OFFICIAL OPENING OF CAMBRIDGE WAR MEMORIAL ON THE EVE OF ANZAC CENTENARY

Posted on

The Cambridge Volunteer Fire Brigade in conjunction with the Cambridge Primary School today officially unveiled a new Cambridge War Memorial at the Cambridge Memorial Oval, to coincide with the Centenary of the ANZAC.

The memorial was constructed by the Cambridge Volunteer Fire Brigade, with funding from the Australian Federal Government ANZAC Centenary Local Grants Program, along with donations from local businesses.

The land where the Memorial is located was originally donated by the Maxwell Family of Cambridge who lost two sons in the First World War, and descendants of the family were in attendance.

Cambridge Volunteer Fire Brigade Chief Mark Brazendale said the Memorial consisted of a large concreted area with three plinths, each dedicated to the armed services.

“A 25-pound artillery piece has been moved to this location and forms the backdrop to this new monument,” Mr Brazendale said.

“It has been an honour to work with students from Cambridge Primary School to coordinate the unveiling today and we would like to thank the business’ who have made this possible through their donations and support.”

Guests in attendance today included Senator David Bushby, representing the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Federal Member for Franklin Julie Collins, Member for Franklin Jacquie Petrusma, Clarence Mayor Alderman Doug Chipman and Tasmania Fire Service Chief Officer Mike Brown, along with Cambridge Primary School students and members of the community.
