The Liberal Government has washed its hands of the forest industry and abandoned Forestry Tasmania workers who will now lose their jobs.
“The Liberals are perpetrating the biggest political con in Tasmanian history,” Labor Leader Bryan Green said.
“The Government’s new proposal for the forest industry is dishonest, deceptive and a betrayal of the sector.
“It is not what they led people to believe they would do before the election but it does prove they are bare faced liars and cannot be trusted.
“All the Government has come up with is a fire sale of Tasmania’s hardwood plantations and even the land the trees are growing on to get itself out of a terrible political jam.
“The Liberals do not have a mandate to privatise public assets.
“The Government is not only walking away from its responsibility it is leaving forest workers and the future of the sector in limbo.
“Selling Tasmania’s forest assets and shifting responsibility to the private sector to save the industry is a shocking cop out.
“Where is the solution they promised for woodchip residues in southern Tasmania, where is the extra timber they said would allow Forestry Tasmania to trade its way out of trouble and where is the bravado we saw from the Liberals before the election?
“Today we have seen once again the Liberals’ have no shame when it comes to breaking promises.”
