Liberals claiming credit where it’s not due
The latest CommSec State of the States report shows some positive signs for Tasmania’s economy but a long road ahead.
Labor Leader Bryan Green said it’s a reminder that the Liberal Government’s rhetoric doesn’t match reality.
“The improvements in the Tasmanian economy largely have nothing to do with the policies of the current government,” Mr Green said.
“Bright spots in the economy are thanks to a lower Australian Dollar and previous investment in sectors like agriculture and aquaculture.
“There are very few tangibles the Liberals can point to when it comes to stimulating the economy.
“Big promises on population growth, planning and cutting regulation all remain unfulfilled one line slogans.
“When you look a bit further than the glossy brochures you find a government that’s really doing very little.
“When it comes to the budget, the Government might think its job is done but the fact is there’s still a long road ahead and it should not expect Tasmanians to carry the burden.
“The budget includes more than $200 million in cuts to the public sector next year alone.
“Tasmania remains at the bottom of the pile when it comes to economic growth and the Liberals are showing no urgency at all.
“We’ve seen the number of mining jobs in Tasmania shrink by 1600 without even a whimper from the Government.
“Labor’s positive about our economic future but it’s about time the Liberals got their act into gear.”
