Tasmanians will have the chance to watch Australia’s world dominating Kookaburras fight for victory in a four nations’ hockey tournament in Hobart next month.
The Liberal Government has provided $60,000 to secure the event which will be hosted by the Tasmanian Hockey Centre from May 2 to 10.
This is an incredible opportunity to watch world-class hockey in our own backyard, with four of the world’s top 10 teams hitting it out in the 10-test match tournament.
The world number one, the Kookaburras, will contest six of the tests, but will no doubt have to fight for every win against New Zealand, ranked seventh, Korea eighth and Pakistan ranked ninth in the world.
It is also a chance to cheer our local hockey heroes with three Tasmanians taking to the field in green and gold; Eddie Ockenden, Tim Deavin and Nick Budgeon.
Tasmania has a very proud hockey history and it’s hoped that this will not only inspire but create the next champions, with training programs and clinics for children to be run as part of the week’s events.
Hosting this tournament is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our hospitality and our world-class Tasmanian Hockey Centre. It’s also an opportunity to build on this event, with the aim of securing future junior and masters’ championships, which are major boons for host cities.
The funding was provided in equal parts by Events Tasmania and the Communities, Sport and Recreation Tasmania.
Will Hodgman, Premier Minister for Sport and Recreation
