Hobart City Council must ensure that its response to graffiti is not just punitive and includes public art spaces and graffiti walls.
“Graffiti in the right place is a legitimate urban art form. It can enliven public spaces, and like all good art it can add value to our civic conversations,” said Greens Justice spokesperson Nick McKim MP.
“Of course not all graffiti is desirable, but simply increasing fines as Alderman Christie has suggested is a knee jerk response that will not work.”
“Alderman Christie’s approach appears to be based on confrontation rather than a genuine understanding of the value graffiti has for many in our community, particularly many young people.”
