TFGA says Tas Irrigation had no choice

Posted on

The Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association (TFGA) says the state’s irrigation scheme developer, Tasmanian Irrigation Pty Ltd (TI), had no choice but to abandon two proposed sectors of the Circular Head Irrigation Scheme.

TI announced today that it would not go ahead with the Harcus sector (Woolnorth, Togari and Brittons Swamp) and the Redpa sector (Marrawah and Redpa) because the demand for irrigation water fell far below the original expressions of interest.

TI still hopes to have a viable scheme in the Duck sector, which will serve farms closer to Smithton.

“There is a changing landscape in the far north-west with several big properties changing hands or on the market,” TFGA president Wayne Johnston said today.

“Perhaps when the dust has settled up there, the demand may change for water in Harcus and Redpa. Farmers will continue to monitor the situation. We are pleased that the Duck scheme looks a real possibility.”
