During 26TEN week in October 2014 The Hodgman Liberal government reiterated their commitment to supporting adult literacy in Tasmania
Conservatively half of all Tasmanian adults have difficulties with literacy.
The Tasmanian Council for Adult Literacy (TCAL) understands that an Assessment Panel, convened by Skills Tasmania to evaluate the 26TEN Adult Literacy grant proposals, has met and made their recommendations and these are awaiting the endorsement of the Minister for Education and Training. TCAL also understands that the revised Tasmanian Adult Literacy Action Plan has been completed and is waiting for the Minister for Education’s endorsement.
The Minister for Education is however holding off announcing the successful 26TEN grant proposals, and is holding off releasing the revised Tasmanian Adult Literacy Action Plan and associated funding.
This seems to indicate a lack of commitment by the Tasmanian Government to supporting adult literacy in Tasmania.
TCAL calls on the minister to immediately announce the successful 26TEN grant applications and commit to the revised Tasmanian Adult Literacy Action Plan and associated funding.
