SUPPORT FOR LAUNCESTON MARRIAGE EQUALITY MOTION WOULD SHOWCASE INCLUSIVE CITY

Posted on

Advocates have called on Launceston City Councillors to support a marriage equality motion due to be debated on Tuesday.

Australian Marriage Equality national director, and 2015 Tasmanian of the Year, Rodney Croome, said,

“Council support for marriage equality will send the message that Launceston is an inclusive city and it will encourage Tasmania’s federal MPs to support the reform.”

“It’s the job of local government to represent the community, which according to every credible opinion poll backs marriage equality.”

“This is why many regional councils in other states have passed similar motions to the one being considered in Launceston.”

NSW and Victorian regional cities that have passed marriage equality motions in recent months include Albury, Wodonga, Geelong and Ballarat.

In 2012 Hobart and Glenorchy city councils passed motions supporting a proposed Tasmanian Same-Sex Marriage Bill.
