The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to lifting education in Tasmania.
Today, I tabled Legislation to redesign the senior secondary course development and qualification system for the better, to create a more efficient and effective model.
Importantly, the new Legislation ensures education stakeholders will be front and centre in the development of a curriculum framework and an accreditation framework for senior secondary courses and qualifications.
These changes mean as Minister I will be taking advice from a newly appointed statutory office as well as experts and stakeholders to prioritise which subjects will be accredited for Year 11 and 12.
The new model also includes a new approach to senior secondary course development, whereby representatives from the Catholic, Government and Independent school sectors work together.
Stakeholders have been extensively consulted and are generally supportive of these changes, with support from the Catholic Education Office, Independent Schools Tasmania, The University of Tasmania, TasTAFE, the TCCI, TASSO, the AEU, The Tasmanian Principals Association, and the Network of Education Associations of Tasmania.
The new system will promote independence of office, be more open and transparent and improve standards for education in Tasmania.
This legislation will abolish the Tasmanian Qualifications Authority, which will result in $3 million in savings over the forward estimates.
