Labor & Greens united against salmon
The Hodgman Liberal Government is supporting our salmon industry, which employs thousands of Tasmanians and is worth more than half a billion dollars.
The Government takes very seriously our obligation to balance a sustainable salmon industry with other fisheries, while ensuring we protect our marine environment.
The salmon industry is subject to comprehensive monitoring. Independent scientific assessment of the environmental indicators that have been monitored clearly demonstrates that the salmon industry is operating in an environmentally sustainable manner.
Any causal links between salmon farming expansion and risk to the abalone or other fisheries have not been scientifically substantiated.
What is clear is that Labor and the Greens are back in bed together for a Senate Inquiry.
Labor Leader Bryan Green was at pains yesterday to try to convince us that he supports the salmon industry, but how can anyone believe anything he says when his party supports a political witch-hunt to stop salmon farming in Tasmania?
Has Mr Green taken Mr Shorten to task on this? Does Mr Green agree with Federal Labor that the salmon industry should be shut down?
The Greens anti-everything campaign, which now has the support of the Australian Labor Party, has no basis in fact.
The Hodgman Liberal Government will continue to work cooperatively with all aquaculture and fishery industries, and ensure appropriate environmental monitoring occurs.
