The announcement today that the Intercontinental Hotels Group will establish a hotel at Hobart’s Myer site is a very positive development and evidence of a growing economy and increased business confidence.

The $45 million Crowne Plaza hotel is expected to create 130 new and ongoing jobs.

This is a major vote of confidence in our tourism industry, with our state’s growing global reputation and record tourist numbers one of the reasons this internationally renowned hotel chain is expanding to our state.

The 187-room, four and a half star hotel, aimed at both business guests and holiday-makers, will go a long way to addressing a bed-shortage, with Hobart often proving too popular for its own good during the peak summer season.

Last year the Liberal Government’s plan to kick-start the economy and create more jobs included providing financial security to the Kalis Group to start repairing the hole at the centre of the heart of Hobart’s CBD, which was undeveloped for seven years.

This decision ensured that development at this site would proceed.

We are advised that the new Myer remains on track for opening by Christmas this year, which is further good news for our economy and especially retail trade.

Our long term Plan is about supporting growth and creating jobs, and while there is a lot to be done, we are building momentum and heading in the right direction.
