Homeless Funding Agreement

Posted on

The Hodgman Liberal Government welcomes news that the Australian Government has committed to extend the National Partnership Agreement on Homelessness for a further two years.

This is very good news for Tasmanians, particularly those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

Since coming to office last year, Premier Will Hodgman, Treasurer Peter Gutwein and I have worked hard with our Commonwealth counterparts to secure the extension to NPAH funding.

This agreement is further evidence of how putting forward a strong case for Tasmania and having a constructive relationship with the Commonwealth can benefit the state, in this case the most vulnerable in our community.

The funding announcement will see up to a further $2.8 million invested each year in the state for much needed homelessness services from 2015-2017.

As a State we will be continuing our commitment to support vulnerable Tasmanians who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness, including women and children escaping domestic violence and young people aged under 18 years.

This new Commonwealth funding will also provide greater certainty and much needed support for the homelessness sector.

The Hodgman Liberal Government looks forward to working with the Australian Government over the next few weeks to negotiate the details of the agreement to ensure the best outcomes for Tasmania.

Our Affordable Housing Strategy 2015-2025 is also concurrently being developed in consultation with the sector to improve access to affordable, safe and appropriate housing and the research from this project will form an important platform in identifying what those outcomes are, as well as increasing the range of affordable housing options and support for Tasmanians through a range of programs and initiatives.
