GetUp has joined forces with 11 organisations representing over 3 million citizens worldwide to fund a campaign aimed at deal-making international negotiators in Hawaii this weekend.

With trade talks on the murky and secretive Trans Pacific Partnership being held on the Big Island, the international coalition funded a full-page print ad in Hawaii’s most read newspaper, the Honolulu Star Advertiser.

The advertisement stated, “No Deal” to the TPP, and demanded negotiators make the details of the agreement available to the public before signing away people’s rights.

The ad builds on a global online campaign, with multiple nation based petitions and a GetUp viral video explainer on the TPP that has reached almost 1 million people across Facebook and Youtube.

GetUp Campaigns Chief Erin McCallum said making sure people know just what’s being negotiated is the key to stopping the TPP.

“The ad clearly shows citizens from around the world are sick of being kept in the dark while a select few trade our freedoms away. The TPP is far worse than no deal for citizens,” she said.

“If they sign it, the Australian Government will open itself up to being sued by big corporations around the world, prices for medication are likely to skyrocket and our internet privacy and freedom to campaign for laws in our best interest will be compromised.”

“This deal needs public consultation before Australia even thinks about signing on the dotted line. From the little we know, it’s a dirty deal that will serve the interests of some of the world’s wealthiest companies at great public cost to our health, welfare, food safety and democracy.”
