Tragic 24 Hours A Reminder to Be Safe on Our Roads

Posted on

On behalf of the Government, I extend my sympathies to the families and friends of those who have died in crashes on our roads over the weekend, and also to the first responders and emergency services members who attended the incidents.

The loss of four lives and the serious injury of another two people in four separate crashes over just one weekend on Tasmanian roads is tragic, and it will also be disheartening for all those who work to keep our roads safe.

As the Minister responsible for both Police and road safety, I am shocked and saddened with the appalling start to this year on our roads.

The Liberal government is strongly committed to driving the road toll down towards zero.

We call for the support of all Tasmanians in this vital endeavour.

The Government will continue to implement our strong road safety policy agenda, including improving road infrastructure and the review of motorcycle licensing and training, to help reduce risk on our roads.

We join with Tasmania Police in appealing to road users to drive carefully and look out for others, particularly vulnerable road users such as motorcyclists who do not have the protection of a vehicle.
We all must be accountable for our actions on the road and take our personal responsibility for each other’s safety seriously.
Rene Hidding, Minister for Infrastructure
