Liberals must commit to taking politics out of education policy
Labor Leader Bryan Green has welcomed the Government’s partnership with the University of Tasmania and says it should trigger a fresh approach to education in Tasmania.
“Labor used its budget reply last year to call for the politics to be taken out of education,” Mr Green said.
“Labor’s proposal was remarkably similar to the partnership announced by Education Minister Jeremy Rockliff today.
“Despite ridiculing Labor’s proposal at the time, the Government is now trying to claim it as its own.
“That is not a good start to what is supposed to be a non-partisan approach to education.
“Jeremy Rockliff must commit to a truly inclusive and cooperative approach to education.
“Not only does that include working with all political parties but a broad array of education, industry and community stakeholders.
“By involving the University of Tasmania and industry leaders we can develop a policy framework that spans across electoral cycles.
“The body must also have the confidence that its ideas will be acted on, even if they’re inconsistent with the Liberal Party’s existing policy.
“It’s time to put good education policy first.”
